Distress:  Pressure.  Squeezing. Trauma. To feel like the walls are closing in you.

What are orphans going through?

In this episode we focused on James 1.27. This is a foundational verses for those adopt and foster in faith.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:  To look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

We spent significant time thinking through the distress that an orphan experiences:

  • Allegations against their family
  • Mental and/or physical abuse
  • Neglect
  • Potential or actual loss of the only family they’ve ever known
  • The system
  • A foster home
  • The task of navigating a myriad of new relationships
  • The Primal Wound

What other pressures do you see in the life of an orphan?  In addition to fostering and adopting, what are some other ways that Christians can care for orphans in their distress?
